The Hamlet, the first and rarest of the trilogy, was the only novel Faulkner published between Absalom, Absalom! in 1936 and Knight’s Gambit in 1949. Malcolm Cowley considered it Faulkner’s best work since Sanctuary, while The New York Times hailed it as “nothing short of superb—subtle and yet direct, humorous, homely, brilliantly evocative of a decaying South in the generation after the Civil War? In this book he is unsurpassable” (quoted in Blotner, 416). The Hamlet with the very scarce original glassine dust jacket. The Hamlet is number 127 of 250; The Town number 337 of 450, and The Mansion is number 71 of 500 copies. Petersen A22.1a; A47.1a; A52.2a. Two chips to original acetate of The Mansion. All three volumes in fine condition. A most desirable collection of these acclaimed novels, ranking among the best of Faulkner’s later works and difficult to find together.
