DAHL, Roald. The BFG

Description

FIRST EDITION OF THE BFG, INSCRIBED BY BOTH DAHL AND BLAKE

DAHL, Roald. The BFG. Illustrations by Quentin Blake. London: Jonathan Cape, (1982). Octavo, original gray cloth, original dust jacket.

First trade edition, warmly and boldly inscribed over the entire endpaper, “To Myles & Sarah, Love, Roald Dahl,” and further signed by the illustrator, in the year of publication, “Quentin Blake, Dec 1982.”

“As in most of Dahl’s children’s stories, the essential plot [of The BFG] is like a folktale? The Big Friendly Giant is a resonant fictional character, with his funny and in a way beautiful confusions of speech? and his skill as a dream maker. And out of the familiar child’s-story premises of reversal and changes of scale, Dahl had invented some memorable comic episodes? There was plenty here for [illustrator] Quentin Blake to work on? The most likable of all Dahl’s books, The BFG was an instant success” (Treglown, 234, 238). Connolly, 102. This first trade edition, signed by its creators, is far more elusive than the signed limited edition of 300 copies published in the same year.

A fine and lovely copy, desirable inscribed by both Dahl and Blake.
