First edition, warmly inscribed on the dedication page, next to the printed dedication: [for Bill and Phyllis] “& Beth & Tom with my very best wishes. Eric Carle.” He has also drawn a smiling spider by his inscription.

A first edition of this wonderful tale of an industrious arachnid. Highly desirable with a drawing by Carle. Beth and Tom were relatives of Bill and Phyllis Halloran, the dedicatees of this book. Bill and Phyllis were close friends of Carle’s; in addition to dedicating this book to them, he quoted a poem by Phyllis in the book Animals, Animals, which he illustrated.
