“THE STANDARD YEAR-BOOK OF BERMUDA”
BUSHELL, John J. Picturesque Bermuda. The Land That Is Different. (Great Britain: Robert Maclehose, 1938). Octavo, original printed green paper wrappers. Housed in a custom clamshell box.
First edition of this Bermuda guidebook, featuring extensive historical and tourist information, illustrations, half-tones, and folding road maps.
Bushell’s Picturesque Bermuda was one of the most well-known guidebooks to be released during Bermuda’s travel boom. Beginning in the 19th century, Bermuda became a preferred stopping point for traders traveling between Europe and the Americas. Gradually, Bermuda transformed into a tourist haven. By 1938, when this 29th edition of Bushell’s guide was published, tourists from around the world were clamoring for detailed maps, photographs, and directories featuring everything from the addresses of florists to information about medical care. Bushell’s guide strove to provide all the knowledge about Bermuda any traveler could need in one handy volume. The first edition was published in 1895; each subsequent edition was substantially revised and updated.
Text generally fine, only light soiling and wear to oversized wrappers. A lovely copy in near-fine condition.
