Description

SIGNED FIRST EDITION OF BELLOW’S RARE FIRST BOOK, THE COPY OF JAMES A. MICHENER

BELLOW, Saul. Dangling Man. New York: Vanguard Press, (1944). Octavo, original tan cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of Bellow’s first book, signed by him on the title page. The copy of James A. Michener, with his owner stamp.

“Bellow is the most distinguished novelist of the post-war period in America… Dangling Man, his first novel, contained a rejection of the stiff-lipped Hemingway code… He believes in the power of feeling and thinks that the novel must show a sympathetic devotion to the life of someone else” (Vinson, 124-25). This copy bears the owner stamp of Pulitzer Prize-winning author James A. Michener, known for his meticulously researched historical novels. Michener was also the recipient of the Medal of Freedom, the United States’ highest civilian award.

Book about fine, notoriously fragile dust jacket with only minor rubbing and darkening to extremities and single tape repair to verso. A beautiful signed copy, with a most exceptional provenance.
