Description
SILENT SPRING, INSCRIBED BY RACHEL CARSON
CARSON, Rachel. Silent Spring. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1962. Octavo, original green cloth, original dust jacket.
First edition, inscribed by Rachel Carson on the half title: “With best wishes Rachel Carson.”
“Silent Spring appeared in 1962, a surprise bestseller that sold 500,000 copies in hardback and millions in paper. Although the book was primarily concerned with the misuse of pesticides, it was the first work to address the larger issues of environmental pollution” (The Book in America, 133). “An impassioned, carefully researched, and meticulously documented call to arms against the indiscriminate use of chemical insecticides and weedkillers. Its publication alerted the general public to the growing danger—known already to ecologists and conservationists—from the careless and, in many cases, egregious poisoning of the earth’s soil, water, air, creatures and plants” (Books of the Century). With numerous in-text drawings by Lois and Louis Darling.
Owner signature. Book fine in an extremely good, bright dust jacket with some shallow chipping to extremities.
