Description

INSCRIBED BY GRAHAM GREENE

GREENE, Graham. The Tenth Man. London: The Bodley Head, (1985). Octavo, original green cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of this early short novel written by Greene in 1944, inscribed: “Gillian, with much love, from Graham.”

Greene wrote The Tenth Man in 1944 when he was under a two-year contract to MGM; the manuscript languished in the studio’s archives, forgotten, until 1983. John and Gillian Sutro, film and theatre producers and writers, were close friends of Greene for over thirty years, especially when they all lived in the south of France. With a small card initialed by John Sutro laid in, indicating “uncorrected copy”; Greene made several corrections to the text and gave the Sutros a hand-corrected copy as well (not the present copy). Fine condition.
